Nursing Homes

Nursing homes provide skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services to people with illnesses, injuries or functional disabilities. Most facilities assist seniors and the elderly; however, some facilities also provide services to special needs individuals, such as the developmentally disabled, mentally ill, and even those who may need drug or alcohol rehabilitation.

Nursing homes are usually stand alone facilities, but some are operated within a hospital or retirement community. A Nursing Home is a secure health care environment. Nursing homes provide 24-hour nursing care, rehabilitation services, meals, activities, as well as assistance with activities of daily living. Care may be provided on different levels including intermediate or skilled nursing care. Payment for services usually includes private pay, long term care insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare (short term only).

Many nursing homes provide much of the nursing care that was previously provided in hospital settings as the population has aged. Special Services in nursing facilities may also include: home health care, adult day care, respite care and others. Therapies may include: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and respiratory therapy.

Choosing a nursing home can be very stressful for you and your loved ones. It is helpful to plan ahead, visit and compare several nursing homes, and make sound financial plans as early as possible. Many people wait until it is too late to make the best decision for their loved ones. Planning ahead gives you and your family more control. Planning ahead makes sure that all your needs are met so you can get the best quality care.

Depending on your needs and resources, you may have other long-term care choices; like community services, home health care, or assisted living facilities. Before choosing a nursing home, check to see if one of these other choices may be better for you.
